Lakes

Lakes circa 1908Two interlinked ponds were dug by hand in 1905. Fondly known as the Arti by the locals.  By 1930 they had become muddy and a bit of an eyesore so they were lined with concrete to form the paddling pool.  The picture on the left shows the round seat which Minnie Witherden describes in her memory of the May Day Celebrations.  it is where she says the May Queen stood.

Play Area

Play area situated to south of the Howard Memorial

In 1953 a couple requested permission to erect a single cradle swing adjacent to the paddling pool as a memorial to their young child.. The request was granted and it set the precedent for the later sets of swings pictured on the right and the development of the present  enclosed play area situated to the east of the pool
