Minnie Witherden

Minnie was born in Edmonton in 1907 and moved to Letchworth with her
parents and brothers when she was 4. She has lived in Letchworth

In 1953 a couple requested permission to erect a single cradle swing adjacent to the paddling pool as a memorial to their young child.. The request was granted and it set the precedent for the later sets of swings pictured on the right and the development of the present enclosed play area situated to the east of the pool |

Originally the Letchworth Office for the practice of architects and planners (Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin), and later the home of Barry Parker and his family, it was leased out to the Urban District Council and opened as a Museum in 1977. In 1984 the Letchworth Garden City Corporation took over the running of the Museum. |

Paid
for by public subscriptions and grants from the Hertfordshire County
Council and other charities, the Howard Garden Over 60's Club was opened
on 3rd September 1953. In 1970 the "Day Care" wing was built. |

Rendezvous CinemaThis popular wooden building which stood on the site now occupied by the Howard Garden Social and Day Care Centre, showed silent movies and hosted concerts and sing alongs finally closed in the 1930's.
